Study of nearly 4 million people shows that statins do NOT prevent heart attacks

This post includes a synopsis of a study published in the Journal of Negative Results in BioMedicine 2011, 10:6 24 May 2011 and a recipe for chicken and zucchini hot salad.

The objective of the study was to investigate if a relation can be detected between heart attack mortality or incidence and statin utilisation, for men and women in different age-groups.The study included a total of 3,922,094 people (1,926,113 men and 1,995,981 women) aged 40-79 years.

The study revealed:
(a) The rate of statin use increased almost three times for both men and women between 1998 and 2002.
(b) The numbers of people suffering or dying from heart attacks was not reduced.

Nilsson concluded: Despite a widespread and increasing utilisation of statins, no correlation to the incidence or mortality of heart attacks could be detected. Other factors than increased statin treatment should be analysed especially when discussing the allocation of public resources.

Recipe of the day

Chicken and Zucchini Hot Salad

Serves 4

Ingredients:
•2.5 lb chicken breast, cut into cubes;
•5 zucchinis, cut into cubes;
Omaha Steaks Boneless Chicken Breasts
Food Mall: Chicken Breasts
•3 tbsp coconut oil, butter, ghee or lard;
•1 tbsp oregano;
•1 large onion, chopped;
•7 tbsp homemade mayonnaise;
•Juice of 2 lemon;
•2 cloves garlic, minced very finely;
•1 head romaine lettuce, washed and shredded;
•Salt and pepper to taste;

Preparation:
1.Heat a large pan over a medium-high heat and cook the chicken cubes until well cooked. Set aside

2.In the same pan, with the rest of the cooking fat, add the onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes;

3.Add the zucchini cubes and oregano and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the zucchini cubes are soft.

4.In a bowl, mix the mayonnaise, lemon juice and garlic.

5.Add the hot and cooked chicken, onion and zucchini to the mayonnaise preparation and mix well.

6.Add the romaine lettuce, mix well and serve in bowls. This hot salad is delicious topped with some fresh almonds.
